About KaraTe
KaraTe (Translated: Empty Hands in Japanese); as the name implies, is a Martial Art and system of self defence. It originated
hundreds of years ago in Okinawa; however, was greatly influenced by an even older Art in China. As well as being a physical
practise, it has a deep meta-physical side whose roots are embedded in the spiritual teachings of Zen. KaraTe does not have any
religious or prejudicial connotations attached to it; it is neither dogmatic nor conditional in any way. The Art of KaraTe has a childlike innocence
and its effects are powerful and long lasting. Through regular training and practice, KaraTe develops not only
the body but the mind and character. The Soul of KaraTe is potent; it is a way of life!
KaraTe for Children
KaraTe is a conduit for some of the developmental areas found in the traditional education systems such as moral and mental
skills. KaraTe opens doors to building a solid foundation of self-esteem, confidence and self respect. These behavioural skills
aid in better focus and clearer thinking thus allowing areas such as decision making and concentration to foster. Through regular
practise KaraTe instils calmness and courtesy within the individual and heightens areas such as mental and spatial awareness.
KaraTe also works on the internal system. Through regular practise the body becomes resilient thereby allowing the individual to
be less susceptible to sickness or injury. The physical side is often the initial reason why most people find KaraTe; improvement
in body coordination, flexibility within the joints and muscles, strength of body, endurance to work harder with greater ease and
enjoyment.
There are many facets of KaraTe, ultimately, it is the attitude and character of the practitioner which is the higher goal.
Bringing balance and harmony to an age where it is most needed, helping to deal with the daily challenges within society.
KaraTe for Adults
KaraTe for adults is a journey that encompasses powerful change. The teaching methodology is somewhat different to the way juniors are taught. Consequently, this is reflected within the benefits accordingly. Initially it is a physical practice involving repetitions of set movements, yoga excercises, learning of the budo culture and understanding KarTe fundamentals. This eventually builds up towards a more practical and physical approach, which involves cardio vascular training, circuit training, bag work, fighting drills, self-defence scenarios and much more.
KaraTe training at the School is generally divided into three main areas: Beginner, Intermediate and Advance with respective levels. We also have a Classical Guide that outlines all of our theoretical and practical requirements. Our approach to KaraTe is extremely bodywork orientated.
Our goal is to empower students with the Budo confidence and with regular training help build strong foundations. In time students embrace the change within themselves and appreciate the harmony our bodies are constantly striving for.
